PRO TIPS:

  1. Get cash at an ATM at the JNB airport. It’s safe and easy there, and you’ll want to have some cash to tip your driver, guide, server, and house keeper at the resort.
  2. Kapama Private Game Reserve is incredible. It’s an all inclusive with 2 game drives a day. It’s the closest reserve to HDS airport and we could not recommend this place enough. We stayed at the River Lodge. It’s the least expensive option of the Kapama properties and it’s absolutely amazing.
  3. Rent a car in Cape Town – There is a sightseeing bus option, but having a car is the best way to see the cape at your own pace. You’ll likely need to know how to drive manual and they drive on the left side.
  4. Book your tickets for Table Mountain and Robin Island in advance. Get to Table Mountain first thing in the morning, the lines in the afternoon can get super long.
  5. Uber is a super easy and inexpensive way to get around Cape Town. Don’t walk outside of the V&A Waterfront at night.
  6. Order the safari plate at Karibu Restaurant. It comes with: Ostrich, Warthog, Impala, Springbok, and Kudu.
  7. We flew Airlink within South Africa and had a great experience. They have a nice beverage and snack service, even on short flights.
  8. On our safari we had one person dedicated to photos, and one person dedicated to video so we could easily capture every moment.
  9. The Watershed is a great market in Cape Town with lots of local vendors that makes for some really nice souvenir shopping.
  10. Wear some compression socks on the plane. It takes a LONG time to get down to South Africa.
